AFES 2025: Promoting the Application of Digital Technology in Modern Medicine

Health & Life – On the morning of November 15, in Da Nang City, the 23rd Congress of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES 2025) opened with the theme “Endocrine Diseases, Diabetes, Metabolic Disorders, and Digital Technology”.

This is a scientific event held biennially, rotating among Federation members. The conference was organized by the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology (VADE) in coordination with the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES), featuring over 270 reports and nearly 100 international speakers.

The conference gathered over 500 international delegates and more than 1,200 domestic delegates, including professors, doctors, scientists, and experts from the region and the world.

Conference overview

According to statistics from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there are currently over 589 million adults worldwide living with diabetes, and this figure is projected to rise to 853 million by 2050.

In Vietnam, the prevalence of diabetes and metabolic disorders has tripled over the past 20 years, with an estimated 5.7 million adults affected, nearly half of whom remain undiagnosed. Along with that, thyroid diseases, obesity, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome are becoming increasingly common, creating a significant burden on the healthcare system and society.

The AFES 2025 conference was organized with the aim of strengthening regional cooperation, sharing knowledge, and updating the latest advancements in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of endocrine-metabolic diseases, while promoting the application of digital technology in modern medicine.

With the theme “Endocrine Diseases, Diabetes, Metabolic Disorders, and Digital Technology,” the Conference focused on exploiting the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and Cloud Computing to improve the efficiency of management, prevention, and patient healthcare.

Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Dang, President of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology, speaking at the Conference.

Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Dang, President of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies and President of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology, stated that AFES 2025 is not only a place for meeting and sharing professional expertise but also a bridge for cooperation among countries in the region. “We expect that the Conference will contribute to promoting scientific research, training specialized human resources, and applying technological achievements to improve the quality of healthcare for the people of Southeast Asia in the digital era,” said Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Dang.

This conference features several notable reports such as: application of artificial intelligence in medicine; development of artificial intelligence models for thyroid cancer diagnosis based on ultrasound images; application of continuous glucose monitoring technology in disease treatment; integrated polygenic scores improving type 2 diabetes prediction in Vietnam… Additionally, some new techniques and rare clinical cases were also presented, such as: transoral thyroidectomy, Gitelman Syndrome, Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome…

Over 1,700 domestic and international delegates participating in the Conference.

In the coming time, the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology aims to continue expanding its international cooperation network, building multi-center research programs, and developing a digital medical data platform for endocrine-diabetes diseases in Vietnam.

Parallel to that, the Association will focus on continuous training for young medical teams, promoting community communication on prevention and early detection of endocrine diseases, aiming for effective disease control and minimizing chronic complications in the future.
