DEVELOPMENT HISTORY OF

THE VIETNAM ASSOCIATION OF DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY

The predecessor of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology (VADE) were two sub-associations in two major cities of the country: the Hanoi Diabetes and Endocrinology Association, established in 1995 with the late Prof. Dr. Le Huy Lieu as president; the Ho Chi Minh City Diabetes and Endocrinology Association, established in 1996 with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai The Trach as president.

The Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology was established by Decision No. 34/2001/QĐ-BTCCBCP dated June 21, 2001, from the Government Staffing Organization Committee.

As of today, the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology has experienced 5 congresses:

1. First Congress of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology:

Organized on November 1-2, 2001, at the Bach Mai Hospital Hall, Hanoi, with 300 delegates attending. The congress elected the executive committee, consisting of 33 members, with Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Tho, Director of the Vietnamese Institute of Gerontology, as President.

Notable Activities:

1. The first National Scientific Conference on Diabetes and Endocrinology, held for one and a half days after the Congress (November 1-2, 2001), marked a new phase in the development of this specialty in Vietnam. The Conference had 21 reports on various topics:

– Thyroid: Issues of hypothyroidism in newborns, increasing goiters among school-age children, especially with the congenital hypothyroidism newborn screening program for early detection and treatment (Report by the National Children’s Hospital). Issues of hypokalemia in Basedow patients, Hashimoto’s autoimmune thyroiditis… and some hemodynamic changes in Basedow disease. There were 21 research topics on thyroid diseases published in the conference proceedings.

– Diabetes specialty. Many reports focused on studying lipid blood disorders in type 2 diabetes patients, coagulation disorders in type 2 diabetes patients, chronic complications such as eye, kidney, heart… complications in diabetes patients; and gestational diabetes was deeply researched.

– Other endocrine conditions, such as adrenal glands, pituitary gland issues, early puberty in children.

2. Officially joined the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES) in October 2002 as one of the six Southeast Asian countries.

3. The second National Endocrine & Diabetes Conference: Held on April 4, 5, 6, 2003, in Ho Chi Minh City with 650 delegates participating. The conference had 30 reports, 4 reports by foreign speakers, and 64 articles in the full-text proceedings. The main contents of reports included: clinical research on endocrine diseases, metabolism: Diabetes – Thyroid – Adrenal gland and some new treatment applications. Some reports delved into basic science, free radicals in the pathogenesis of diabetes, anti-GAD, GH, and thyrotropin receptor autoantibodies. Topics related to endocrine metabolism and complications of diabetes like nail fungus in type 2 diabetes patients were also discussed.

2. Second Congress of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology

The congress elected a new Executive Committee consisting of 41 members, with Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Tho re-elected as the President for this term.

The congress outlined several action plans such as:

  1. The Endocrinology-Diabetes sector should delve more into basic scientific research, developing biological and cellular sectors…
  2. Diabetes is a lifelong disease and should be considered a social disease, requiring support from the state and socialization for patient care activities.
  3. Recommend the State and the Department of Health allow the establishment of Endocrinology departments at provincial hospitals nationwide.
  4. Establish local Diabetes-Endocrinology branches, starting with key provinces.
  5. A Scientific Council of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes-Endocrinology should be established to help propose directions of operation.
  6. The association should publish its scientific journal as decided by the executive committee’s full session in Hanoi.

3. Third Congress of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology in Hue

The third Congress of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology was held in Hue on April 14, 2010. The congress elected a new executive committee, consisting of 43 members. Assoc. Notable Activities:

  1. The third National Scientific Conference on Endocrinology and Metabolism, held in Hanoi, on November 9-10, 2007
  2. The launch of the “Endocrinology – Diabetes” journal: This is the official forum of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes-Endocrinology on endocrinology and metabolism. The journal was born according to decision No. 1740/GP.BTTT on November 18, 2010, signed by Deputy Minister Do Quy Doan, recognizing Prof. Dr. Thai Hong Quang as Editor-in-Chief, and two Deputy Editors-in-Chief, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thy Khue and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Thuy. Editorial secretary: Dr. Nguyen Vinh Quang. The journal was assigned an ISSN code by the National Agency for Science and Technology Information: 1859 – 4727 (Decision No. 18/TTKHCN – ISSN, issued by Director Ta Ba Hung on April 11, 2012). The journal of Endocrinology & Diabetes has been rated with a project point of 0-0.5 by the National Professors Council since 2016. By March 2024, it has published 70 issues.
  3. Increasing international integration: The Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology is a member of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (AFES), the International Society of Endocrinology (ISE), and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
  4. The fifth Vietnam Endocrinology & Diabetes Conference: Held in Ho Chi Minh City on August 21-23, 2009
  5. Successfully hosted the 16th Southeast Asia Endocrine Conference – 16th AFES 2011, in Ho Chi Minh City. This was the first time the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology hosted an international scientific conference, gathering over 1400 international and Vietnamese delegates, evaluated as one of the richest and most quality content among AFES Conferences.

 

4. Fourth Congress of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology

Notable Activities:

  1. The 7th National Scientific Conference took place from October 2 to 4, 2014, in Hanoi, with the theme “New Achievements and Challenges in Endocrinology and Metabolism,” with over 1400 participants, and over 100 research projects published in the summary booklet “Research Works” in Vietnamese and English. There were over 50 lectures, with many reports by international scientists, and very broad and varied topics such as: Updating knowledge and recommendations related to Diabetes and metabolism, kidney complications due to Diabetes, gestational diabetes, Pediatric Endocrinology, blood lipid disorders in diabetes patients, new treatments for diabetes, foot diseases in diabetes patients, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, other diabetes complications, endocrine disease exploration, hypoglycemia, osteoporosis, pituitary disease, adrenal gland disease, thyroid and parathyroid diseases, endocrine disease in the elderly, men’s health…

The presenters were international colleagues such as Prof. Malcolm Nattrass (UK), Prof. Jean Claude Mbanya Cameroon, Prof. Deerochanawong –Thailand, Dr. JJ Mukherjee NUH – Singapore, Prof. Lee Kok Onn NUH – Singapore. A/Prof. Maria Craig, and many Professors, Associate Professors, Doctors in Endocrinology-Metabolism, Cardiology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Men’s Health in Vietnam presented, raising the reputation of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes – Endocrinology in the domestic and regional medical community.

  2. Other activities:

– Developing local professional associations, such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, Hai Phong

– Organizing diabetes patient club activities through activities of local associations in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hue.

– Organizing activities to commemorate World Diabetes Day on November 14 each year

– Consulting and reviewing: Many members are Professors, Associate Professors, Doctors, and Specialists II guiding and reviewing for scientific councils, Ph.D. thesis councils, Master theses at universities nationwide. Regularly participating in advising on specialties for some hospitals and endocrine centers nationwide, participating in media programs on the national and local television about Endocrinology and Diabetes and related fields.

– Implemented international cooperation programs with Novo Nordisk (Denmark) and ADA (USA).

– Led content development for the “Endocrinology-Diabetes and Metabolism” section in the Ministry of Health’s large book on “Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines”. Additionally published “Diabetes Treatment Guidelines” in 2013.

– Published many valuable professional publications:

The entire Executive Committee of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Term V (2019-2024) The Ninth National Conference on Endocrinology and Metabolism, held in Hue (May 10-12, 2019), during the Fifth Congress of the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology

 

Notable Activities:

  1. The Ninth National Scientific Conference on Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2019, with the theme: New era of endocrine-metabolism disease, individualization, multi-factor intervention. Over 1100 delegates participated from hospitals, medical centers, disease control centers, medical and pharmaceutical universities nationwide.

The conference program included nearly 190 presentations and research topics. Presenters were key expert professors and doctors in endocrine-metabolism diseases from major Vietnamese medical centers (Hanoi, HCM City, Hue,…) as well as doctors working at medical universities, general or specialized hospitals across the country. International presenters came from Hong Kong, USA.

Key topics at the conference included: Updating diagnosis, monitoring, choosing new drugs for diabetes treatment in adults, managing and preventing disease progression in pre-diabetic patients, managing cardiovascular risk factors in diabetes patients, comprehensive clinical research reports on diabetes treatment. Besides, there were presentations on diabetes treatment for special groups, such as pancreas transplants, dialysis, stem cell use, gestational diabetes, pancreatic stone diabetes, diabetes in children,… In the field of endocrinology: thyroid diseases, adrenal gland diseases, gonadal diseases…, particularly reports on hormone use in transgender individuals.   1. The Tenth Scientific Conference on Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolic Disorders in Vietnam was held on October 30-31, 2020, in Can Tho. This was the first nationwide endocrine-diabetes scientific conference held in the Mekong Delta. The conference initiated the first step in conveying the “7, 8, 9” message to the community, aiming for HbA1C < 7% for diabetes patients – a standard waistline for everyone (< 80cm for females; < 90cm for males). Alongside traditional topics, the conference also addressed timely issues on processing, management, and monitoring diseases amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. The Eleventh Scientific Conference on Endocrine, Diabetes, and Metabolic Disorders in Vietnam, 2022. Theme: Endocrine-Diabetes-Metabolic Disorders in the New Era. Held on October 21-23, 2022, in Hanoi. Almost 1200 delegates attended. The conference had nearly 150 overviews and research topics. International presenters came from Spain, Cuba,… There were 30 young scientific papers and presentations in English at the conference. The organizers also hosted around 20 poster presentations. Key topics included: Choosing new drugs for adult diabetes treatment, introducing new technologies in diabetes treatment, managing overweight and obesity through medicinal and non-medicinal treatments; biomarkers in endocrine diseases,… The conference also ran “debate sessions,” providing in-depth discussions on subjects like: “Is Metformin still the first-choice drug in diabetes treatment?”; “Should micro-thyroid cancer surgery be performed or not?”; “Should prediabetes be treated proactively?”.

– On October 2, 2019, with support from the Hue Central Hospital, the Vietnam Association of Endocrinology and Diabetes officially launched the association’s office on the 4th floor (General Internal – Geriatrics Department), 4-story building, 16 Le Loi, Vinh Ninh Ward, Hue City.

– Within the framework of the Eleventh Scientific Conference on Endocrine, Diabetes, and Metabolic Disorders in Vietnam, 2022, the Vietnam Association of Endocrinology and Diabetes held a ceremony to honor five leading professors in the field of Endocrinology-Diabetes: Prof. Dr. Le Huy Lieu; Prof. Dr. Tran Duc Tho; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mai The Trach; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thy Khue; Prof. Dr. Thai Hong Quang

– On April 7, 2022, the Department of Science, Technology, and Training, Ministry of Health granted continuous training institution codes to the Vietnam Association of Endocrinology-Diabetes, Decision No. 36/QĐ-K2ĐT. The continuous training institution code is B85.

– From November 16-19, 2023, representing the Vietnam Association of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Dang, MSc. Diep Thi Thanh Binh, Dr. Tran Quang Nam, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thua Nguyen took the stage to receive the flag for hosting the AFES 2025 to be organized in Vietnam.
